Welcome to “Population Matters”
Before getting introduced to population sciences I had no clue where to search for information related to population. Being a layman, my understanding about demographic
indicators was limited. I was curious to know how a simple indicator like sex ratio is calculated or how experts say that population of India would cross hat of China by a particular year. It was during my course at International Institute for Population Sciences (I.I.P.S.), Mumbai, that the idea of creating a site like this stroke me. I thought it would be nice to explain some of thebasic concepts in demography, how the basic indicators are calculated, and whereto look for particular information to those who are new to demography.
This is a humble attempt to bring all the demographic information related to India under one portal. This site gives information regarding:
Ø
Data sources
Ø
Reports
Ø
Research institutions
Ø
Library (OPACS)
Ø
Journals
Ø
Seminars
Ø
Scholarships
Ø

Ø
Summer and winter schools
The objective of
this site is:
- To provide information under one portal that is otherwise available in different websites, thus making the search easier. Enhance the understanding of layman about basic demographic indicators.
- To provide information to young research scholars to advance research in Population Sciences.
Hope it
helps in free exchange of academic ideas and scholarly resources. Any information
